In a rather small, pointless and kinda ugly corner of the internet, there exists a breed of people who get angry over game icons.
If they smell that a Switch icon has been released in the wild, and that this icon lacks the name of the game on it… then they will step forth from their small and pointless corner and make as much noise as their feeble bodies can possibly make in hopes that someone will listen to them! I wish this was satire, but it’s truth.
In honour of these people, I wrote this forum post/thread for them, which was from a cancelled project.
How Snakes and Ladders new icon ruined my enjoyment of the game

So I must confess. This is going to be a rare thread for me, but I cannot keep this to myself anymore. The game Snakes and Ladders has a new game icon… and it is TERRIBLE. I’ve never been this offended in my life! How dare they inflict this badly designed monstrosity upon the world!? Has anyone actually seen it?!
I can’t be the only one to despise it’s raw existence can I?! Look at the classy Super Maria logo.

It’s a masterclass of icon design. It has a superb image that conveys the game perfectly and then, most crucially, the text to show you what game it is. This is the key. THE TITLE OF THE GAME! Now look at this.
(Snakes and Ladders new icon)
Snakes and Ladders with its new updated icon took away this simple and humble privilege of knowing the name of the game. How else am I supposed to know what game I’m playing!? It looks cheap and tacky and like a dumb mobile game for casuals. My home menu used to be a marvellous art gallery of amazing artwork and now it looks like a cave painting made by a 3 year old. It’s ruined.
I used to love playing Snakes and Ladders—the David Smart soundtrack will always be a personal favourite of mine—but I just cannot physically play it anymore. I refuse. Absolutely refuse. I hope the devs of the game see this and know that they need to change it back or they’ve lost a future customer on all their products.

What annoys me about this is that these devs have worked their butts off and this is the thanks they get? All that blood, sweat and tears wasted. I thought people cared about gameplay on here… but it seems an icon is more important…

It’s more than an icon, it’s a window into the game. A bad icon reflects a bad game. A bad icon makes me not want to play it. has to be pleasing to the player and conform with other icons and only then wil other player want to play the game. Is that so hard to understand? Bad icon = Bad game

Why don’t you people understand!? A bad icon disrupts the entire library of games! ITS BAD DESIGN! It reduces the users comfort when browsing there library of games! It goes against the principle of good design! Trust me, I’m an expert.
